In May 1995, the Green Bay Press-Gazette published my letter in People's Forum. After reading the recent articles on drinking alcohol in Wisconsin, I thought it appropriate to re-publish the letter.
Asks about alcohol: Is alcohol a drug? What does the drug, alcohol, do? Are more accidents the results of using alcohol? Accidents of pregnancy? Accidents of child abuse? Accidents of property damage? Accidents of broken families?
Will we aim for more responsibility or less? Does a parent say to the child, "Because you are doing it anyway, it is OK to break my laws?"
Do we want a better country, state or city? Do we equate fun with drinking the drug we call alcohol? If you knew that a life would be saved, or injury avoided, if you abstained from alcohol, would you?
Could our money be better spent? What about the emotional pain?
Maybe these are some of the correct questions to ask.
