Officials seek to raise sexual assault awareness

Local officials hope to raise awareness about the problem of sexual assault in Wood County.

In 2012, 58 people reported sexual assaults in the county, and the Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault cites studies that show only about 50 percent of people who are the victims of sexual assault report it, meaning the number of victims in Wood County is much higher, said DaNita Carlson, executive director of The Family Center, a Wisconsin Rapids-based domestic violence shelter.
