Eighth-grader Race Van Pay runs the 400- and 800-meter events for the Denmark Middle School track squad.

When Mother Nature decides she wants to cooperate in the next week or two, the 14-year-old will be in a different kind of race, pitching it sideways on Saturday nights with an IMCA Northern sportmod as a rookie at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek.

The son of local modified legend R.M. Van Pay isn't exactly going into this deal blind. Last year, Race took advantage of six practice sessions at 141, getting quite a bit of seat time by himself. ...
