My husband and I have volunteered at St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter for almost eight years.

One day we noticed in our church bulletin that the homeless shelter at St. John's was desperately in need of help and gave us a person to contact. We were put in the time period of 5 to 8 p.m. where we served the meals.

At that time there was just the bare floor, a very small TV and park tables were used to eat on and watch TV and mats to sleep on. I remember there were all men except for two elderly ladies who sat in two old rockers. One night an elderly man wanted one of the rockers and made a big to-do about ...
