Berken signs with the White Sox

After being released by the Chicago Cubs during spring training, De Pere native Jason Berken signed a minor-league baseball deal with the Chicago White Sox last week.

The White Sox assigned Berken, a right-handed pitcher, to their Class AAA affiliate at Charlotte, N.C.

Berken made his season debut Tuesday night, getting the starting nod for the Knights in a game at Norfolk. Berken shut out the Tides on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts in five innings but left without a decision as Norfolk rallied with five runs the last two innings to gain a 5-4 win.

Berken, 29, is with his third Major League Baseball organization. He previously pitched in the big leagues with the Baltimore Orioles and the Cubs, who claimed him off waivers last September.

SNC baseball team runs into record book

The baseball team from St. Norbert College in De Pere set two team records as it swept a Midwest Conference doubleheader from host Carroll University on Saturday.

The Green Knights won the first game 26-12, eclipsing the previous single-game record of 22 runs.

SNC hit six home runs in the game, including two by first baseman Travis Mason. Fellow West De Pere High School graduate Nick Pierre, the Green Knights' left fielder, also had a home run.

The Green Knights then pulled out an 18-15 victory in the nightcap.

The total output of 44 runs for SNC shattered the previous team standard of 33 in a doubleheader.

Pierre hit a home run, and Mason was the winning pitcher in a starting role in Game 2.
