Letter: We can't legislate religious morality

Legal rights must belong to all

EDITOR: Those who claim to be the most staunch supporters of the U.S. Constitution are also the ones who choose to restrict the rights of those they see as not morally worthy. Most of the social red flags are abortion rights, voting rights and now gay and lesbian marriage rights.

Since we are supposed to be a land of "liberty and justice for all," why do we always try to suppress the ways our fellow Americans choose to live? We have a moral and legal obligation to make sure everyone has the same rights.

I go to a church for what it stands for. When it comes to government I vote based on what the candidate stands for. Our government stands for the rights of all without discrimination because of skin color, political party, the way we use or do not use birth control or who we love. Jesus ate with sinners. If you consider gays and lesbians sinners, or if the person who chooses an abortion is a sinner, then look to your own sins before casting your stones.

Government is not about who is more moral, whose religion is better or who is righteous. A sin is a sin and how it is handled depends on what religion you practice or do not practice. We cannot require everyone in U.S. to believe the same way. That would be the end of democracy.

Donna Schrameyer,

Edgar
