Five counties whose combined attendance jumped 87 percent from a year ago influenced the outcomes of more key issues at Monday's statewide conservation hearings than hunters might concede.

Three of those counties also combined to elect at least four delegates with nonhunting interests to the Wisconsin Conservation Congress, the 360-member citizens group that advises the Natural Resources Board, which sets policy for the Department of Natural Resources.

Attendance at the hearings - held simultaneously in Wisconsin's 72 counties - was 6,096 statewide, up 32 percent from 4,611 in ...
