United Way of Marathon County is planning an exciting new event for Sept. 20 and 21 - CommUNITY Fest 2013.

This event, to be held at Marathon Park, will include the fourth annual United We Can food sculpture competition, live entertainment, free games and activities for kids and families, food vendors, costumed characters, a 5K race and more.

Last year, the 21 sculptures built for United We Can contained more than two tons of food that was donated to area food pantries after the event. With the larger venue at Marathon Park, we will have room for many more entries. The competition will include separate divisions for businesses of different sizes, schools, family groups, and this year a special youth division. This is a perfect project for youth groups, scout troops or class projects.

United We Can is more than a food drive. Your team will practice leadership, teamwork, creativity, and philanthropy, all rolled into one project that benefits local food pantries and helps our friends and neighbors. And it's fun!

If you haven't attended previous United We Can competitions, go to www.unitedwaymc.org/galleries/unitedwecan to check out the amazing sculptures from last year at http://www.unitedwaymc.org/Galleries/UnitedWeCan/.

Get inspired, get creative and start planning your entry now.

The United Way Parade and Community Day on The 400 Block in downtown Wausau is a September tradition. This event will be restructured as part of CommUNITY Fest 2013 into fun, free activities for kids and families. There will be indoor and outdoor activities at Eastgate Hall (formerly the Youth Building) and also at Marathon Park. Various organizations will provide games, face painting, a petting zoo and more.

United Way Emerging Leaders will hold their Fantastic 5K during CommUNITY Fest. The run/walk will start and end at Marathon Park on Sept. 21. The popular children's race will also be part of this event.

This new event will bring together our business partners and local nonprofit organizations in a new and unique event that focuses on our goals and priorities in the critical areas of education, income and health.

Mark your calendars, watch for more information to come and plan to join us as we celebrate all the good things in Marathon County at CommUNITY Fest 2013.
