Often, the terrorists Anne Speckhard interviewed wanted mainly to spout propaganda - at first. They wanted to lecture. They would speak in terms that could have come directly from one of their message boards or one of their leaders' Internet videos.

Some researchers, Speckhard said, would be inclined to shut down that talk. She listened. It wasn't useful for her research as a psychologist. But it was hugely useful to let them get it out of their systems, to let them burn through their talking points.
