The announcement in December that the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. had lost track of $50 million in taxpayer-funded loans to private companies was both appalling and unacceptable. But, this sort of thing could happen again and we'd likely never know, because Wisconsin lacks the budget transparency that many states are providing taxpayers.

Spending transparency is simply good government - it empowers the public to watchdog state spending, promotes fiscal responsibility, bolsters public confidence in government, and prevents waste, fraud and abuse.
