As hundreds of central Wisconsin girls hit the town this month to make sure their nails are as trendy for prom as their dresses and hair, they'll visit salons with hazardous chemicals and potential infection risks but almost no oversight.

The number of fingernail technicians in Wisconsin is up 10 percent since 2005, when the state began keeping records, as hair salons have expanded to offer manicures, pedicures and designs that can cost as little as $10 and as much as $50.
