State superintendents plead with Nygren for hike in state aid

Marinette Republican tells administrators to expect increase, but also consider alternatives

The co-chairman of the state's Joint Finance Committee told area school administrators Friday they should consider referendums and even consolidation as possible solutions to their fiscal woes.

Rep. John Nygren (R-Marinette) also said the state's plan to increase spending on vouchers for private school has nothing to do with the amount state aid will increase for public schools in the next two-year budget.

"Those are two separate discussions," Nygren said flatly. ...
