Second annual event offers helping hand to needy

Highland Community Church was a hive of activity Saturday, with dozens of volunteers providing free medical exams, oil changes, meals and other services for hundreds of people.

This is the second year the Wausau church has offered the four-hour free clinic for the needy. A year ago, nearly 300 people were provided with $30,000 in services and food, said Michelle Mercier, an administrative assistant at the church and one of the two lead event organizers. Mercier couldn't say how many people took advantage of Saturday's event.
