Long winter depletes snow removal budgets

Persistent snowfall and winter weather conditions have some county and municipal public works officials in central Wisconsin worried about their annual budgets.

In Marshfield, city street crews have blown through about 75 percent of their $846,000 snow removal budget for 2013, said Dan Knoeck, public works director.

"We suspect we're going to be short by the time December rolls around, but that remains to be seen," Knoeck said. "It's pretty unusual for us in recent years, and of course last year, we had a very mild winter, and we were well into road construction projects at this time." ...
