I am writing to urge area citizens to call your legislators and ask them to take voucher expansion out of the budget. Our Wisconsin State Constitution states that we must provide for free and equal public education for all. There is not sufficient tax funding to create two education systems by starving our public schools to give handouts to unaccountable voucher schools.
Public schools, such as our successful local schools, are the best investment of tax dollars and they are accountable to our community.
Expanding these vouchers goes against everything Wisconsin values - including fairness, equality and local control.
Instead of siphoning taxpayer dollars out of public schools and giving them to unaccountable private schools, ask your legislators to support policies that strengthen neighborhood schools, improve teaching, and enhance achievement. Taxpayer-funded vouchers accomplish none of that.
To prepare students for jobs of tomorrow, we need to strengthen neighborhood schools, improve teaching and enhance student achievement. Please act now to demand your elected representatives reinvest in our community public schools and keep vouchers out.
