Downtown parking meters rejected but time changes OK'd by committee

City Council members on the Public Safety Committee on Monday evening did not endorse installing as many 200 parking meters downtown with a potential charge of 75 cents an hour.

However, they did support a simplified downtown parking ordinance that would convert many one-hour spaces, especially on Washington and Eighth streets, into having a two-hour time limit.

In addition, parking spaces on side streets between Seventh and Ninth streets from Washington north to Chicago Street also would allow shoppers and restaurant-goers two hours, often increased from a current 60-minute limit. ...
