Wisconsin needs Medicaid expansion

EDITOR: Wisconsin has an opportunity to extend health care to tens of thousands of low-income people, for only a fraction of the actual cost. The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, gives states the option to extend Medicaid coverage to low-income adults who have not had coverage in the past. Gov. Scott Walker's proposal to provide coverage to currently uninsured childless adults must extend Badgercare eligibility to 200 percent of the federal poverty level in order to cover all low-income childless adults, parents and caretakers.

Badgercare, Wisconsin's name for Medicaid, is designed to provide essential health care services to low-income people. It provides essential prevention services with a minimal cost. It covers things that many insurance plans don't, like dental exams or behavioral health visits and will help folks get some of their immediate health needs addressed that could even lead to a better paying job.

I have been uninsured, so I have personal experience living without health care. But I also serve on the board of directors for Bridge Community Health Clinic - a nonprofit clinic that doesn't turn people away for not being able to pay for services. We see patients every day who are unemployed, under-employed or not paid enough to afford basic health care. I hope that you will join me in urging Walker to extend Badgercare coverage for our friends and neighbors who are least able to pay for it themselves.
