One of the goals of United Way of Inner Wisconsin's Volunteer Center is to recruit and match volunteers for non-profit organizations needing your help in south Wood and Adams counties. The following are this week's volunteer opportunities.

Aging & Disability Resource Center: Volunteers are needed for the Senior Home Safety Program. The Senior Home Safety Volunteer assists individuals with staying as independent and healthy for as long as possible by making minor safety related home repairs. The Senior Home Safety Volunteer provides minor home repairs and modifications based on the Senior Home Safety Program coordinator's assessment of the safety issue. No cosmetic improvements. Key responsibilities are complete minor safety related home repairs, such as (but not limited to): installing handrails and grab bars; repair windows and doors; install smoke detectors; and reattach loose tiles and carpet. No plumbing or electrical work. Volunteers must complete an application, which includes giving permission for a background check. There is onsite training. Time commitment: Home repair projects can be scheduled during a time that best fits the volunteer's and the participant's schedule. Time commitment can vary throughout the year but averages 2 to 4 hours a month.

Jeremiah's Crossing: Love horses? Love kids? Jeremiah's Crossing may be the place for you. Jeremiah's Crossing is a therapeutic horseback-riding ranch for children with special needs. Volunteers help make this opportunity available at no cost to families. We are currently accepting applications for side walkers and horse leaders. Side walkers need to be comfortable walking alongside a horse, assisting children in their effort to stay in the saddle and follow instructions given by the instructor. Horse leaders are responsible for taking care of the horse, grooming, tacking, leading and helping the horse help the children. The horses are well trained. The ranch staff will train you in handling techniques specific to our horses. Volunteers must be 15 years and older to be a horse leader and 14+ to be a side walker. Training will be provided for all volunteers. A background check will be requested.

Wood County Head Start: We are looking for a volunteer with some professional experience to sit on our Finance Committee. The ideal person would have some practical experience dealing with finances and budgets and could commit to attending a meeting once a month for about an hour during the day. This would be ideal for a retired professional person who would still like to be active in the community.

National Volunteer Week is April 21 to 27. This is a great time to start your journey to volunteering. We have several one-time volunteer opportunities to help you get started. Call the Volunteer Center to learn more information.
