Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy made it clear from the beginning of the negotiations with quarterback Aaron Rodgers: The team would have no trouble coming up with the cash necessary to set a new market value for their star player.

More important, though, was finding a way to structure the contract so that it wouldn't put the Packers in a salary-cap bind that would prevent them from doing business as usual when it came to re-signing key players or acquiring others.

Murphy believes the Packers were successful in that regard on Friday, when Rodgers signed a five-year contract extension ...
