City to review how it distributes $700K in room tax

Wausau leaders want to create a task force to examine how the city should distribute about $700,000 in annual hotel room tax to local nonprofits.

The cash is collected from an 8 percent fee tacked on to every hotel- and motel-room bill. The city keeps $175,000 to balance its own budget and distributes the rest to organizations and events in the community that promote tourism or improve quality of life.

The task force, which has not yet been created, will review the city's current room tax policy for the 2014 budget, Finance Director Maryanne Groat said. ...
