Columnist's view: Not as much time left as you'd think

I'd like to use this space today to warn you about what I've recently discovered is a new way of frittering away precious amounts of our lives.

Here in the U.S.A., the average life expectancy is a bit under 80 years. I recall reading that for men it's 78 years and change, maybe three months. That works out to roughly 937 months, 28,580 days, or 685,920 hours.

A big chunk - one-third, 309 months - is spent in bed. As kids, we slept longer than the recommended eight hours a night. We older folks sleep less. But throughout our lives, it averages out to about eight. That leaves us with about 628 months for ...
