Foremost Farms USA announced Friday it will close two western Wisconsin plants, one in Waumandee, the other in Alma Center and consolidate production to its facilities in Appleton, Richland Center, Milan and Marshfield.
The company said the move will eliminate 52 jobs in Alma Center and 50 jobs in Waumandee when both sites close June 30.
"In recent years, our members have invested over $50 million in our plant system to increase cheese production capacity, maximize throughput and enhance processing capabilities," said Dave Fuhrmann, president of Foremost Farms USA. "These investments have grown our processing capacity here in Wisconsin as our members' milk volume has grown."
The company said the cuts will not impact the its output. Foremost in 2012 marketed about 6 billion pounds of milk and 525 million pounds of cheese.
Foremost Farms USA is based in Baraboo. It is a farmer-owned milk processing and marketing cooperative with annual sales of $1.7 billion.
