Rep. Dave Murphy: University of Wisconsin should reduce tuition 4 percent

As vice-chair of the Assembly Colleges and Universities Committee, I was dismayed to learn that the University of Wisconsin System has amassed a tuition surplus in undesignated funds.

After reviewing a report from the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau, outlining the $650 million fund surplus, I submitted a budget request requiring the UW System to reduce tuition by 4 percent next year and to freeze tuition at the reduced rate the following year.
