The League of Women Voters (LWV) of the Ripon Area and Lumen Charter High School are co-sponsoring a WAV (Water Action Volunteer) water quality monitoring training on Tuesday, April 30, at 3:10 pm. in room 179 of the Lumen Charter High School at 850 Tiger Drive, Ripon WI.

Potential volunteers interested in helping monitor local waterways are welcome to attend. The training will last 3 hours, and will involve both classroom time in Lumen and hands-on practice in Silver Creek behind the Ripon Public Library.

The trainer, Kris Stepanuck, is the volunteer stream monitoring coordinator of the statewide program. Citizen volunteers of all ages currently monitor 507 unique sites around the state, adding their data to an online database used by policy makers, researchers and activists.

Lumen teachers Kat Griffith and Jesse Schwingle will be coordinating Lumen's water quality monitoring efforts in collaboration with the League of Women Voters. "We're excited to get this training," says Griffith. "This is a perfect project for us, involving a locally important issue, opportunities for our students to learn by doing, and a chance to serve our community and protect our waterways."

The League of Women Voters has been committed to protecting water quality for decades, and sees local water quality monitoring as a natural next step to take. The League welcomes the participation of any aspiring water quality monitor! The training will take place rain or shine. For further information contact LWV (below).

The LWV is a nonpartisan organization of men and women that encourages informed and active participation in all levels of government. Membership information is available at riponarea.wi.lwvnet.org or by calling Pam Nelson-Icenogle at (920) 896-0118.
