Green Bay Packers running back coach Alex Van Pelt spoke to the media after the selection of UCLA’s Johnathan Franklin in the fourth round. Here are some highlights from his news conference:

♦ Eddie Lacy more of a downhill type of runner. Johnathan Franklin could do a lot to make guys miss. Excited to have both.

♦ A little surprised Eddie fell down that far. I had him as the top back in the draft. I’m excited to have him where we got him. Same with Franklin. To get him where we got him was very positive for us.

♦ Both different style runners. Eddie is obviously a bigger back. More physical. I thought Montee Ball (drafted by the Denver Broncos just before Lacy) was tremendous in his own right.

♦ I think in general you like the bigger body size. Not that the smaller guys aren’t effective, for the type of weather you get here and the type of situations you get here late in the season, bigger backs usually hold up better in protection.

♦ It’s obviously going to increase the competition in the room. It’ll sort itself out as we go through OTAs and minicamp.

♦ These are two of the better pass-protectors I had in the draft.

♦ You always want to run well. We weren’t satisfied.

♦ Neither guy is really a concern with the rules changes. Eddie runs a little more physical but it’s not a concern. Franklin makes people miss.

♦ Franklin good receiver out of backfield.
