Burning Issue: Appleton Common Council

A municipal meeting of importance to residents of the Fox Cities

What: Appleton Common Council

When: 7 p.m. Wednesday

Where: Appleton City Hall, 100 N. Appleton St., sixth floor

Main topic: Bike lanes on Mason Street

Why it matters: After a committee meeting last week that lasted several hours, the council will take up this hot-button issue. The Municipal Services Committee voted 3-2 Tuesday to exempt the 900 and 1000 blocks of N. Mason Street from bike lanes to preserve parking. Neighbors are upset they will lose on-street parking on the new route and delivered 543 signatures to City Hall in a petition. Cyclists are eager for the new lanes that have been called a "backbone" that will cut north and south through town.

Prospect for passage: Despite the significant opposition from neighbors, the "not in my backyard" argument might not be compelling enough for the full council. The bike lanes already were endorsed in the city's bike master plan years ago. Though it's been discussed for months, the council could decide to kick the issue back to committee for more work toward a compromise.
