MADISON — Two state representatives circulated legislation Monday that would grant sexual assault and domestic abuse victims the right to be accompanied by a victim advocate.
Rep. Jim Steineke, R-Kaukauna, and Rep. Scott Klug, R-Rome, said the law would guarantee that victims have “emotional support and respect” after reporting an assault. Similar laws exist in 11 other states.
Current law only allows victims to be accompanied by advocates under certain conditions, like if the crime was a factor in a child custody case.
After being circulated for co-sponsors, the bill is expected to introduced next week.
