Sturgeon spawning season underway on Wolf River

Sturgeon started hugging the Wolf River's rocky shoreline Monday, signifying the beginning of the fish's spawning season.

After a cool start to spring, temperatures finally warmed enough to entice the big fish to start cruising along the river banks and lay their eggs, said Bryan Harrenstein, conservation warden with the state Department of Natural Resources.

"Right now we're seeing the sturgeon starting to come upriver, basically in the very beginning stages of the spawning," said Harrenstein, standing on the Sturgeon Trail in New London. "They use the rocks, basically, to trigger ...
