'Give Kids a Smile' in its 11th year

"Give Kids a Smile" is a national event where dentists and their staff volunteer their time and services, to provide screenings, treatments and education to children throughout the United States. Corporate sponsors also provide expertise and materials to make the program possible. Each year, approximately 450,000 children benefit from more than 1,500 events, all because of the efforts of 40,000 or more annual volunteers.

Fond du Lac County is once again grateful and would like to extend thanks to Dr. Kathleen Doyle-Kelly, Dr. Thomas Gietman, Dr. Timothy Harper, Dr. Jeffrey Kraig, Dr. Thomas Kraus, Dr. Julie Maury, Dr. Danielle Pike, Dr. Christopher Rauch, Dr. Todd Sarauer, Dr. Kenneth Scholz, Dr. William Shaw, and Dr. John Welch, along with staff for making Give Kids A Smile Day once again possible. Thank you to Henry Schein Corp. for donating dental supplies.

This year through the local dentists generosity 116 low-income children received over $45,000 of donated dental services. These dentists and their staff provided much needed education, as well as preventive and restorative dental care. The appointments were coordinated through the Fond du Lac County Health Department.

Untreated dental disease is painful and affects a child's physical, emotional and social development. Children with untreated dental decay can't eat or sleep properly; they can't concentrate in school, not to mention how it affects them emotionally. Dental disease among kids from underserved families is epidemic. 80% of children's tooth decay is found in just 25 percent of children.

For good dental health, the American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, flossing once a day, eating a balanced diet, drinking water containing fluoride and visiting a dentist regularly.

We would like to thank all of the wonderful local dental providers for helping to improve the oral health of our community, whether it is through Give Kids a Smile, Save a Smile, Donated Dental Services, Samaritan Clinic or personal donations done throughout the year. We appreciate all you do!

If you have questions about this year's event or would like to participate in 2014, please contact Save a Smile dental program at 929-3085.
