WHITEFISH DUNES

May 4 is the annual Work Play Dune Day at Whitefish Dunes State Park. Volunteers can grab their rakes, put on gloves and join park staff and the Friends of Whitefish Dunes support group for a morning, afternoon or whole day of sprucing up the park.

Crews of all levels of ability, strengths and ages are needed, although ages 15 and younger must work with a parent. Indoor or outdoor work is available. The morning session begins at 9 a.m., with the afternoon shift starting at 1 p.m. and a lunch served at noon to those who sign up in advance. Call the park to register.

Whitefish Dunes State Park is at 3275 Clark Lake Road (County WD), south of Jacksonport. Naturalist programs are offered year-round. The shelter building is available daily. Annual or daily park stickers are required while visiting. For more information, call (920) 823-2400.

PENINSULA May 2

? 8-9 a.m. - Early Morning Bird Walk

Meet at Nelson's Point parking lot. Trails may be wet. Bring binoculars if you have them.

? 2:30-3:30 p.m. - Keep Peninsula Beautiful

Meet at the third pull-off north of Skyline Trail parking lot. Bring gloves if you have them. Volunteers will be pulling garlic mustard and picking up litter.

May 3

? 10 a.m.-noon - Eagle Trail Hike

Meet at Eagle Tower to hike Peninsula's most spectacular trail. Spring flowers, park geology featured. Trail is difficult and may have icy spots. Two miles.

May 4

? Half Marathon Run.

Nature Center staff will be sharing a fun children's craft and park information at the Nicolet Beach Shelter.

May 5

? 10 a.m.-2 p.m. - Coyote Surprise: Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Drop in during Nature Center hours to learn about Trickster Coyote and make a coyote critter to keep.

The nature center at Peninsula State Park is just off Wisconsin 42 in Fish Creek. Most programs are free and open to the public, but a state park sticker is required for entry. For nature center hours or more information, call (920) 868-3258.

NEWPORT

Newport State Park is on County NP, east of Wisconsin 42 near Gills Rock. A state park vehicle sticker is required for admission. For more information, call (920) 854-2500.

POTAWATOMI

Potawatomi State Park, 3740 County PD, is on the shore of Sturgeon Bay just west of the city. Gently rolling upland terrain is bordered by steep slopes and rugged limestone cliffs. The park has more than 1,200 acres of forest, a campground, trails and access to Sawyer Harbor. A state vehicle admission sticker is required for motorized vehicles.
