Door County resident Katie Schnorr will release her debut album of jazz standards May 4 at a party hosted by Greco Gallery on Third Avenue in Sturgeon Bay. Schnorr, whose album is titled "Blue Shoes" studied music in college and then fell in love with jazz while living in Chicago.

"I love everything about the music - the improvisation, the melodies, the playfulness of the lyrics, and the history," she said.

About a year ago, Schnorr met George Sawyn, a guitarist who also moved to Door County from Chicago.

"We got together one afternoon to play, and afterward we just looked at each other and said 'This is fun!'" Schnorr said.

The album features Schnorr and Sawyn playing jazz standards, including the standbys "All the Things You Are" and "Scotch and Soda," as well as lesser known tunes such as "'Tis Autumn" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most."

The album title comes from a longstanding bet Schnorr had with herself.

"About six years ago, I got this bee in my bonnet to make an album. I bought myself a pair of fabulous blue shoes, but I told myself I wasn't going to wear them until the record was complete," she said.

It took her a while to find the right partner, but six years later, the record is finished and she gets to wear her blue shoes.

"Blue Shoes" was recorded, mixed and mastered at Allemande Studios in Sturgeon Bay. CDs will be available for purchase at Greco Gallery and on itunes and CDbaby. The CD release party kicks off at 7 p.m. and will feature a live performance by Schnorr, Sawyn and special guests.
