Brunette, Hill shine for Green Knights

? St. Norbert College senior shortstop Steph Brunette was named Midwest Conference Performer of the Week for softball on Monday, April 29.

Brunette, a West De Pere High School graduate, helped the Green Knights win six of eight games during the previous week as they clinched the MWC's North Division title.

She hit .500 (14-for-28) with two doubles, a triple, nine runs scored, five runs batted in and four stolen bases. Brunette also didn't make an error in 35 defensive chances.

SNC went into this week with records of 10-4 in conference and 19-13 overall.

The Green Knights will host the MWC tournament on Friday, May 3, and Saturday, May 4, at the Mel Nicks Field on Lost Dauphin Road in De Pere. The four-team, double-elimination tournament starts at 10 a.m. Friday. The championship round is slated for Saturday at noon and 2 p.m. (if necessary).

? SNC sophomore Randy Hill soared to two event wins as the Green Knights men's track and field team dominated the Wisconsin Private College Invitational it hosted Saturday, April 27.

Hill, a West De Pere graduate, won long jump with a distance of 22 feet, 9 inches and triple jump with a mark of 45-9 .

He was second in high jump with a clearance of 6-6 .

SNC amassed 192 points to repeat as the meet champion. Carthage College finished second with 135.

The Green Knights women's team placed second with 198 points, just behind champion Carthage's 206.5.

SNC senior Kaylee Beck, also a West De Pere alum, was runner-up in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 46 minutes, 49.53 seconds.

Whitman credited with race win at 141

A post-race inspection resulted in a victory for Johnny Whitman of De Pere on the opening night of racing at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek on Saturday, April 27.

Whitman had finished second in the IMCA modified feature race behind Marcus Yarie of Wausau.

A subsequent inspection of Yarie's racecar found it to be equipped with illegal spindles. That disqualified Yarie and moved Whitman up to first place in the race results.

Duathlon in Neenah on Sunday morning

Midwest Sports Events of De Pere will hold the ninth annual Paper Discovery Duathlon on Sunday, May 5, at Riverside Park in Neenah.

The event will start at 7:30 a.m. It features a 2-mile run, an 18-mile bike ride and a culminating 2-mile run.

Final marathon training runs at West De Pere

The last two weekly training runs for this year's Cellcom Green Bay Marathon will start at 7 a.m. on the Saturdays of May 4 and 11 in the parking lot at West De Pere High School, 665 Grant St.

The Prevea Sports Medicine-sponsored runs are free, but donations to the marathon charities are appreciated.

Marathon weekend is May 18-19.
