The breakthrough nearly came last year.

A difference of only one stroke in what turned out to be a one-hole playoff between De Pere and Fox River Classic Conference rival Bay Port in a WIAA Division 1 sectional kept the former from advancing to the state tournament. The Redbirds last qualified for state as a team in 1999.

The hard part for De Pere High School's varsity team this spring isn't so much trying to bounce back from last season's disappointment of getting so close as it is having to replace the majority of its talented 2012 lineup. ...
