Fond du Lac Red Cross volunteer receives state Hero Award

Joyce Keyes was among the 15 or so people gathered Thursday afternoon to celebrate the retirement of Fond du Lac Red Cross staff member Sherry Holmes.

Unknown to Keyes, however, was that the party actually masked a surprise organized in her honor - a visit from Wisconsin First Lady Tonette Walker.

The wife of Gov. Scott Walker surprised Keyes at the local Red Cross building, 272 N. Main St., to award her with April's 2013 Wisconsin Heroes Award. The honor is given out monthly to a single Wisconsin resident who strives to make the state a better place through heroic volunteer efforts, Walker said. ...
