Jessica Mollison said Father Joe Walijewski continues to bring people together, even from thousands of miles apart.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of La Crosse on Wednesday officially kicked off its cause for Walijewski, a priest who served in both central Wisconsin and South America, to become a saint. A service was held at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph the Workman. About 250 people attended, according to the diocese.

Walijewski will become one of about 3,000 people worldwide who have been proposed for sainthood to the Congregation for the Cause of Saints in Rome. If canonized, he would become ...
