On average, Wisconsin farmers are expected to see a 30-cent per hundredweight increase in the amount they were paid for milk in April.

That brings to the projected April price to $19.70 per hundredweight, up from $17.60 per hundredweight in April 2012. That's the strongest April price since 2004, when it was $20.40 per hundredweight.

The March price was $19.40 per hundredweight, according to a monthly report from the Wisconsin field office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The national average price for April is expected to be $19.40 per hundredweight, according to the report.

"Eleven of the major milk producing states are anticipating an increase in price from March to April, while 9 are expecting a decrease and 3 are expecting no change," the report says. "California is predicting the largest increase in price, rising 89 cents to $18.40 per hundredweight ... On the other hand, Michigan's price is expected to fall 30 cents to $19.40 per hundredweight."

Final prices for April, along with preliminary numbers for May, will be released in about a month.
