Koy: On Day of Prayer, pray for blessings, forgiveness (column)

The Bible in the Book of Ecclesiastes tells us that there is a time and place for everything. Judging by what's been happening to our nation recently, this certainly seems like an appropriate time to pray for our country. That is the theme for today's National Day of Prayer: "Pray for America."

We are all familiar with the phrase "God Bless America." Considering the turmoil our country is in, perhaps we should also be using the phrase that appears on a lawn sign at a home in Manitowoc. The sign reads, "God forgive America." Can we truly expect God's blessing on our country when we continually violate his precepts?

When God looks at the United States today, what does he see? He sees a country whose irresponsible political leadership has us wallowing in a $17 trillion quagmire of debt. He sees political leaders who can't get along, who place their own agendas before those of the people. He sees our country's religious freedoms eroding. He sees a nation that is trying to redefine his definition of marriage; an entertainment industry that is polluting the minds of young and old alike with sex and violence; and he sees a nation that sends nearly $500 million dollars a year of taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood, the leading abortion clinic in America.

Remember the jump rope song from years past: "First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby in the baby carriage"? Our culture today has made a complete shambles of that adage. According to the Family Research Council, for the first time in our nation's history the median age of women having babies is now lower than the median age of marriage. Forty-eight percent of babies are now born to unwed mothers. The seeds of sexual promiscuity, greed, hatred, violence, corruption and lust are springing up all across our landscape.

Yes, let's continue our longstanding petition of "God bless America." But let's preface our petition with the acknowledgment and confession of our egregious behavior against our creator.

Our nation today holds its 62nd National Day of Prayer. Public and private prayer gatherings will be held throughout America, including here in Wausau. My hope and prayer is that there will be a national crescendo of voices ascending to the heavens, petitioning God, asking for his forgiveness as well as his blessings. Will you join me in that prayer?
