May 3, 1938 - New book charging machine at library: With the arrival yesterday of the electric book charging machine, the automatic method of checking out books went into effect immediately at the Kellogg Public Library, replacing the old hand method.

Registration under the new system began about a week ago. Every adult borrower is asked to register at the library, receive an identification number, which appears on a metal plate on the identification card each borrower must present to take out a book.

Also under the system, the old borrower's card, filled with dates, is not used. Each book has a regular book card as before, however, and date cards, showing when the books are due, are slipped into the pocket of each book.
