Spencer Spotlight: Sports teams finally enjoy great weather

This spring really has played havoc with the high school sports season.

With nearly half the season wiped out, athletic directors have spent a lot of time on the phones. This past Saturday was used to get some games in.

Ernie Banks, Hall of Fame player of the Chicago Cubs, is the owner of a well-known sports quote. He said, "It's a great day for a ball game; let's play two!"

That is exactly what the Spencer softball and baseball teams did. The Lady Rockets hosted Chequamegon Screaming Eagles in a varsity doubleheader. The Rocket Baseball Team hosted the Auburndale Apaches in a varsity/junior varsity doubleheader.

Considering we had snow on the ground just a few days ago, the fields weren't in that bad of shape. A lot of extra manpower (and lady power) went into making the infields playable.

The outfields were wet in spots, but that was not going to stop these four teams from playing. With remnants of snow piles slowly fading, the games were on.

The weather was gorgeous as the temperatures hovered just below or above the 60-degree mark. The sun was shining down in all its glory, and a nice breeze made watching a game rather comfortable. It was one of those days where you weren't quite sure how to dress. Some had jackets on and others were in short sleeves.

It was a great day for watching high school sports. Just the fact the teams were able to play was good enough. Fans from both sides cheered as their teams made outstanding plays and came up with some clutch hits. Fans were treated to some great plays from players who have spent most of their seasons inside.

It is good to see that these dedicated athletes finally are getting a chance to play the sport they love. There are many good players on these teams who have put in their time during practice.

Won't you take the time to come out and support them? My only advice would be to check the school website to see what the revised schedule looks like. See you at the ballgame!
