It's been an unusual spring for wild turkey hunters, with some snow in the woodlands the first three periods and too often, rain, wind and sleet. With 21/2 weeks left, conditions have improved. Opening day of the smallmouth bass fishing season on Green Bay today will lure plenty of anglers out for a crack at a whopper, but cold water could make for one of the slower starts in years.

On the other hand, if it's big walleyes or northern pike you're after, the "late" spring means plenty of them are still cruising downtown Sturgeon Bay waters, Little Sturgeon and other hot spots, offering both shore and boating anglers a shot at a trophy.

Drifted live shiners should be good for all three species this weekend, and trolled stickbaits and spoons should also get an occasional strike. ...
