Column: Brule River gives anglers opportunity to get head start on opening weekend

The plan was to fish Saturday morning. But first we had to make sure the lakes weren't iced over.

Most of our opening weekend crew arrived in the early portion of Friday. My dad and I drove up together, so it was our job to go check the lakes for ice. I had been up to the cabin earlier in the week and they still had several inches of the white stuff on them. As we pulled up to our first lake in the area, a huge sigh of relief came over us to see the lake fully open, and ice free.
