Ex-School Board member opposes voucher proposal

As a former member of the Green Bay School Board who places high importance on the quality of education in our community, I strongly oppose proposals that would provide public funds to be used for private education.

The voucher proposal targeting our district does great disservice to Green Bay schools, to dedicated educators, to students and families who believe in and support their schools, and to the community itself. Our public schools have well-served our community's families for many generations and they continue to do so in times of new challenges and opportunities. The role of public education will be key in ensuring the future strength of our community. A voucher program would inevitably divert state financial support from public schools, weakening the district's abilities to serve our children.

The citizens of our community elect School Board members who make their decisions in open session under public scrutiny. The board and district educators are responsible for ensuring access to high quality education to all Green Bay School District students, including children of all backgrounds, neighborhoods, special needs, and abilities. We must not handicap their ability to do so.
