In a column on Wednesday, opinion editor Robert Mentzer looked at election returns showing that Marathon County has turned rightward in recent years - and asked for feedback on what is driving that shift. Here are some of the comments we received:

Democrats have blown a lot of smoke and thrown a major tantrum with little result. Case in point; the fiasco over the Labor Day parade a few years ago, or some of the tactics used by the liberal super PAC CREDO in 2012. The Democratic base seems to have gotten smaller and more intense, but that doesn't always equate to success at the polls.

The fact that Romney also won the 7th Congressional District is going to make it difficult for a Democratic congressional candidate in 2014 to make the case to the party apparatus or outside groups that they should invest in the this district, particularly in a midterm election.

I think it was the recall.

Conservatives and some who were on the fence politically got so angry about it that they made sure to get out to the polls in large numbers and vote for the Republican Party from that point on. Especially in Marathon County, where the recall troops tried to block anyone who disagreed with them politically from even participating in a parade! (Editor's note: The Marathon County Labor Council in 2011 unsuccessfully attempted to keep Republican politicians from marching in a Labor Day parade in Wausau.) That stuff really riled people up around here.

The county is pretty Catholic and for quite awhile now, despite the supposed separation of religion and state, the Catholic leaders often preach from the pulpit and tell their congregants who to vote for.

Maybe the biggest reason is the vacuum left by U.S. Rep. Dave Obey's retirement. He ruled the roost for so long that it stunted the growth in the party.

- Doug Diny

The Democratic Party has moved farther left faster than most of Marathon County's residents are willing to move. The Republican Party has not changed much in that time.

- William Meyer

It is one of the prime reasons I can't wait to officially leave Marathon County. The population here has turned increasingly right wing tea party and narrow-minded.
