Winter not kind to area alfalfa fields

It's been numerous years since the area has experienced the extent of alfalfa winterkill and injury that is becoming more apparent with each passing day. This is especially bad news given the dearth of forage inventory following the drought. Although some fields may still be in the "keeper" category, many others just don't have enough live plants to warrant another production year.

New seedings and south slopes seemed to have weathered Mother Nature's wrath the best, while older stands and those areas that are poorly drained have little future production potential. There's little point ...
