A 20-year-old Wausau man accused of putting a Marathon County Jail officer in a coma pleaded innocent by reason of mental disease or defect Monday to related charges.

Fredrick Morris entered the plea at an arraignment in Marathon County Circuit Court. Morris faces felony charges of aggravated battery with the intent of causing bodily harm and battery by a prisoner.

Elnora Henderson of Wausau, Morris's mother, said in April that her son suffers from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and might not have been taking his medication as prescribed when the attack happened. ...
