USDA agrees to buy $5 million in excess cranberries for nutrition programs

A recent move by the U.S. Department of Agriculture will mean $5 million in sales for cranberry growers, including those in the Wisconsin Rapids area.

The USDA has agreed to purchase surplus cranberry juice concentrate for domestic food nutrition assistance programs, and the measure will help both corporate and independent growers and processors, who are struggling after a big harvest in Canada and a decline in juice sales led to a worldwide surplus, just as many finished investing in new plants or expanding their marshes, said Tom Lochner, executive director of the Wisconsin ...
