Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt is giving up his seat on the region's advisory hotel tax commission.

Schmitt nominated himself and was approved by City Council in 2011 at a time when the Room Tax Commission was wrestling with KI Convention Center expansion.

A deal later cleared the way for a Schmitt-backed plan to earmark surplus hotel tax revenue for an estimated $18 million convention center expansion. The project is expected to break ground later this year.

The advisory commission includes representatives of the hotel industry and area municipalities with hotels.

Among Green Bay representatives, Schmitt will be replaced by Larry Vesely, a local attorney and past president of the Lake Largo Homeowners Association.
