Papermaker Appleton this week reported a four percent drop in net sales for its first quarter.

The company said discontinuation of the sale of carbonless paper in non-strategic international markets was the reason sales dropped. The company's first quarter sales totaled $210.8 million, down from $219.6 million during its first quarter a year ago.

The company said its thermal papers segment experienced its fifth consecutive quarter of sales growth. First quarter 2013 sales of thermal papers were 13.9 percent higher than its previous year quarter.

Appleton reported first quarter operating income of $17.9 million compared to an operating loss of $50 million during first quarter 2012. The company employs about 1,800 people, including 870 in Appleton.
