May 8, 1942 - 81,000 register for sugar books: Some 1,200 volunteer registrars laid down their pens at 8 o'clock Thursday evening, after registering 81,000 Brown County residents since Monday morning, and issuing sugar stamp books to 87 percent of that number.

Figures reported this morning showed a total of 80,822 registrations, and a few small schools yet to report will bring the final tally slightly over 81,000. Thursday's registrations were 14,679, with 12,455 books issued.

If there are any who have not registered, they will have to do without sugar until May 21 or later, when a second registration period will be arranged by the county rationing board.

Reports today were being brought in from or picked up at the 80 elementary schools which served as registration sites for the county, and the complete Brown County tabulation will be in state headquarters at Milwaukee Saturday morning.
