An intoxicated man was arrested inside a Green Bay mall Wednesday after he led police on a 6.6-mile chase that began following the apparent assault of a woman with a baseball bat.

A person who had been riding with the man also was in custody.

Green Bay Police Lt. Chad Ramos said the man fled in a pickup truck when police tried to stop the vehicle on East Mason Street about 6:50 p.m. after receiving a report that a woman had been assaulted. Police cars pursued the truck around the east side; radio broadcasts indicated that the driver several times failed to stop for stop signs or red lights.

Near the Baird Creek Parkway, a passenger jumped out and ran; he was later found at an address on Baird Creek Road.

Ramos said the driver continued to flee officers. At the East Town Mall off East Mason Street, the man left the truck and ran into a store at the mall, where police arrested him. Several patrol cars sat outside the mall after the arrest, emergency lights flashing, but the mall remained open.

Police did not immediately have details on the victim of the alleged assault.

Ramos said officers would recommend charges on a number of offenses, including operating while intoxicated, against the driver. It was unclear if the passenger would face charges.
